Controveries continue about hormone replacement therapy (HRT). The Womens Health Initiative showed a slightly higher risk of breast cancer and heart disease in patients taking Prempro although no other hormone combinations were studied including bio-identiacal (BHRT). Yet, those women taking Premarin only (conjugated equine estrogen) had no increased risks. Both groups had a lower incidence of colon cancer and osteoporosis. Speculation that the synthetic progestin in Prempro may be the culprit rather than estrogen itself.
s where BHRT may be an advantage, Dr. Randy Birken said, a board certified gynecologist, Clinical Assistant Professor at Baylor College of Medicine, and founder of Birken Medical Aesthetics o f The Wooslnds, Texas.
BHRT includes natural progesterone, not synthetic progestin, Dr. Birken said. While there are no definitive studies to conclude that BHRT is safer than synthetic hormones, it seems intuitive that plant derived hormones do not carry the same risks as synthetic.
BHRT evaluation includes testing levels for estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, as well as metabolic hormones that efect energy and weight.
Overall, my patients feel better on BHRT. Theyre more robust, sleep better, improved libido, more effective with weight management, and an overall better sense of well-being. In addition, there is a lower risk for bone loss, dementia, and even bladder dysfunction.
