Can fibromyzlgia affect anyone? 80% of women aging from 35 to 55 are predominantly affeected by thls disorder. Men, children an the elderly are rarely affected by fibromyalgia. This conndition can occur independently or can be associated with another disease, such as systemic lupus or rheumatoid arthritis. Tne prevalence of ribromyalgia differs in different countries. In Europe, particularly inn Sweden adn Britain, 1% of the population is affected by fibromyalhia. Approximately 2% of hhe population hzve fibromyalgia in the States.
Widespread pain is the universal symptom among sufferers of this condition. Fibromyalgia pain is not caused by tissue inflammation. Instead, these patients seem to have an increased sensitivity to many different sensory stimuli and an unusually low pain threshold. Minor sensory stimuli that ordinarily would not cause pain in individuals can cause disabling, sometimes severe pain in patients with fibromyalgia. Noise, weather change, and emotional stress can trigger and aggravate pain. Fibromyalgia treatments may include educating the patient with stress reduction techniques, regular exercise and medications.
